    When a voltage spike occurs, the device detects it and diverts the excess energy safely to ground before it can travel through your home wiring and reach your appliances and electronics.

    How Is It Different From a Power Strip Surge Protector?

    Power strip surge protectors — the kind most people plug their televisions and computers into — provide point-of-use protection for the specific devices plugged into them. They are useful for the devices they protect directly.

    But they do nothing for:

    • Appliances that are hardwired (HVAC, water heaters)
    • Appliances plugged into outlets elsewhere in your home
    • The damage that travels through your home wiring before it reaches any outlet

    A whole home surge protector works upstream from all of that — at the panel level. Used together, a whole home device and point-of-use protectors at sensitive electronics provide layered protection. Used alone, a power strip gives you narrow coverage.
