    Planning a Kitchen Remodel? 9 Electrical Decisions to Make Before Construction Starts

    A kitchen remodel can start with the fun decisions.

    Cabinet colors. Countertops. Backsplash. Appliances. Pendant lights.

    Then the electrician starts asking questions.

    Where is the microwave going? Gas or electric range? Do you want outlets in the island? Where should the under-cabinet lighting switch? Are you adding a beverage refrigerator? Will that wall be opened?

    Suddenly, electrical planning is connected to almost every part of the kitchen.

    That is why the best time to involve your electrician is before the kitchen is finished on paper—not after the cabinets arrive.

    Here are nine electrical decisions worth making before construction starts.

    Finalize Your Major Appliance Locations and Specifications

    Do not plan the electrical system around: “We're getting a refrigerator over there.”

    The electrician needs more useful information.

    Ideally, identify the actual appliances—or at least narrow down their specifications—before electrical rough-in begins.

    That can include:

    • refrigerator;
    • range;
    • cooktop;
    • wall oven;
    • microwave;
    • dishwasher;
    • disposal;
    • range hood;
    • beverage refrigerator;
    • wine cooler;
    • ice maker;
    • warming drawer;
    • other built-in equipment.

    Why so early?

    Because appliances can differ in voltage, amperage, connection method, plug configuration, installation location, manufacturer clearance requirements, and circuit needs.

    The more accurately the appliance plan is defined, the less likely you are to discover late in the project that the electrical connection is in the wrong place—or that the selected appliance requires something different from what was originally planned.

    Keep a folder with the specification sheet or installation manual for each major appliance.

    Your electrician, cabinet installer, plumber, and general contractor may all need information from those documents.

    Decide on Your Range and Cooking Equipment Before Rough-In

    The cooking area can have a major impact on the electrical plan.

    A kitchen designed around one appliance type may need different infrastructure if the homeowner later switches to another.

    For example, your project might involve:

    • freestanding electric range;
    • induction range;
    • separate electric cooktop;
    • wall oven;
    • double wall oven;
    • microwave/oven combination;
    • gas cooking with electrical ignition and accessories.

    Do not assume that because the old kitchen had an electric range, every replacement appliance has identical electrical requirements.

    Likewise, if you are moving the range to another wall—or moving cooking into an island—that decision needs to reach the electrician early.

    Moving equipment can change circuit routing, outlet or connection location, cabinet layout, wall access, floor or ceiling access, and project cost.

    Choose the appliance first. Then design the electrical work around its actual requirements.

    Plan for the Appliances People Forget to Mention

    The refrigerator and range usually make the plan.

    The smaller specialty appliances are where kitchens often get interesting.

    Think about what you use now and what you expect to add.

    Examples include:

    • coffee or espresso station;
    • toaster oven;
    • air fryer;
    • blender;
    • stand mixer;
    • countertop ice maker;
    • beverage center;
    • wine refrigerator;
    • under-counter refrigerator;
    • water filtration equipment;
    • charging station;
    • built-in coffee maker;
    • warming drawer.

    This is not simply about adding outlets everywhere.

    It is about designing a kitchen around how you actually use it.

    A homeowner who makes coffee every morning in one corner may want a very different electrical layout from someone who stores every countertop appliance out of sight.

    The electrician should understand those habits before the backsplash and cabinets determine where everything can go.

    Decide How You Will Use the Island or Peninsula

    Kitchen islands are no longer just countertop space.

    They may function as food-preparation areas, seating, homework stations, charging areas, serving areas, appliance locations, cooking surfaces, or sink areas.

    That makes island electrical planning more than: “Put an outlet somewhere.”

    Before electrical work begins, decide:

    • whether the island will contain appliances;
    • whether it includes a sink;
    • whether it has seating;
    • where people will use devices;
    • whether pendants will be centered over it;
    • whether you want charging or smart-home features;
    • whether the island location is changing.

    Electrical requirements for island and peninsula configurations can be code-sensitive and dependent on the actual design.

    Do not rely on an old kitchen's outlet locations as the blueprint for a substantially redesigned one.

    Give the electrician the current cabinet/island plan.

    Design the Lighting in Layers

    One ceiling fixture is rarely enough for a remodeled kitchen.

    Good kitchen lighting usually performs several different jobs.

    General Lighting

    Provides overall illumination. Possible examples: recessed lighting, flush-mount fixtures, or other ceiling lighting.

    Task Lighting

    Helps you see where work actually happens. The most obvious example is under-cabinet lighting over countertops.

    Decorative Lighting

    Adds visual character. Examples: island pendants, decorative fixtures, glass-cabinet lighting, or accent lighting.

    Night / Low-Level Lighting

    Some homeowners also want subtle lighting for evening use without turning on the entire kitchen.

    The important part is to decide those layers before walls and ceilings are complete.

    Think through fixture positions, switching, dimming, lighting zones, cabinet lighting, color temperature preferences, and smart controls where desired.

    Lighting becomes much easier to install cleanly when wiring is planned during the remodel instead of added afterward.

    Decide Where You Want Switches—and How You Want the Kitchen Controlled

    Homeowners spend a lot of time choosing fixtures and almost no time thinking about the switch wall.

    Until they use the kitchen.

    Before rough-in, ask:

    • Which lights should turn on together?
    • Which should dim?
    • Do you want separate control over island pendants?
    • Should under-cabinet lights have their own control?
    • Do you want switches at more than one entry?
    • Will smart switches or automation be used?
    • Is there a location where a large switch bank will look awkward?

    These questions matter because electrical controls affect both function and appearance.

    A beautiful kitchen can still be frustrating if one switch controls too much, important lighting cannot be dimmed, switch locations feel inconvenient, or controls conflict with cabinetry or trim.

    Walk through the kitchen plan as though you are entering and using the room. Where would you naturally reach for the lights? Plan from there.

    Think About Outlets Before the Backsplash Is Installed

    Outlet placement affects everyday kitchen use—and becomes much less pleasant to change after a finished backsplash goes in.

    Before finalizing electrical rough-in, think about:

    • countertop appliance locations;
    • coffee station;
    • charging needs;
    • appliance garages;
    • countertop corners;
    • island or peninsula use;
    • pantry or beverage areas;
    • accessibility;
    • visual placement.

    This is also where design and electrical requirements need to meet.

    You may want outlets to visually blend with tile, stone, cabinetry, or countertop edges.

    But aesthetics cannot override applicable electrical requirements.

    The better approach is to have the electrician and design team coordinate before the backsplash is installed. Then placement can satisfy both practical and design needs as much as the actual project allows.

    Ask Whether the Remodel Changes Your Circuit or Panel Needs

    A kitchen remodel can increase electrical demand even when the home's overall footprint stays exactly the same.

    You may be adding or changing cooking equipment, specialty appliances, refrigeration, lighting, dedicated circuits, or smart devices.

    That does not automatically mean you need a new electrical panel.

    It does mean the existing system should be considered as part of the remodel.

    Your electrician may evaluate:

    • existing circuits;
    • breaker spaces;
    • panel condition;
    • service capacity;
    • wiring serving the kitchen;
    • planned appliance loads;
    • other major household electrical loads.

    For example, the kitchen remodel may be happening at the same time you are considering an EV charger, infrared sauna, hot tub, pool equipment, generator, electric water heater, or other electrical upgrades.

    Looking at these projects together can be more useful than treating every future electrical load as an isolated decision.

    Important

    An available-looking breaker space is not, by itself, proof that a home's electrical system can support any new load. The actual project needs to be evaluated.

    Coordinate the Electrician With Cabinets, Plumbing, Tile and the General Contractor

    Electrical work does not happen in a vacuum during a kitchen remodel.

    It intersects with cabinets, countertops, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, tile, framing, appliances, and lighting.

    For example:

    The cabinet installer needs to know where electrical equipment and under-cabinet lighting components will go.

    The electrician needs accurate cabinet elevations.

    The plumber may be working in the same sink-base cabinet where electrical equipment serves the dishwasher or disposal.

    The tile installer needs the final outlet arrangement before cutting finished material.

    The general contractor needs everyone sequenced correctly.

    The goal is not simply to “get the wiring done.” It is to make the electrical work fit the completed kitchen.

    When Should the Electrician Get Involved?

    Earlier than many homeowners expect.

    A useful point is: after the kitchen layout is becoming real, but before the design is so locked that electrical changes become disruptive.

    Ideally, have available:

    • floor plan;
    • cabinet layout;
    • elevations if available;
    • appliance list/specifications;
    • lighting ideas;
    • island location;
    • desired specialty features.

    You do not necessarily need every decorative fixture purchased.

    But the electrician should understand the design well enough to identify the electrical work required.

    Will a Florida Kitchen Remodel Require an Electrical Permit?

    Electrical work performed as part of a kitchen remodel may require permitting and inspection depending on the actual work.

    Florida Statutes §553.79 broadly regulates permits for building alterations, and the specified small-project permit exemption does not extend to electrical work performed on property containing a single-family dwelling.

    That does not mean every cosmetic kitchen update requires the same permit. The actual electrical scope matters.

    Examples of work that may change the permitting question include new branch circuits, relocated wiring, panel work, substantial electrical alterations, or other permanent electrical modifications.

    The appropriate local enforcing agency and project scope determine the actual permit requirements.

    8. Other Electrical Projects — mention any planned EV charger, generator, sauna, spa, panel upgrade, outdoor kitchen, or pool equipment.

    This helps provide better context for the home's electrical needs.

    Remodel Estimate or Electrical Diagnostic?

    Most well-defined kitchen remodel projects are estimate-driven.

    You know what you want to build. The question is: What electrical work is needed to make that plan happen?

    An electrical diagnostic becomes more relevant when there is an unknown existing problem, such as a circuit repeatedly tripping, damaged wiring, unexplained electrical behavior, overheating, unknown existing modifications, or another condition that has to be identified before the scope can be determined.

    Should You Plan for Future Electrical Needs While the Walls Are Open?

    This is one of the best times to think ahead.

    Not because every homeowner needs to overbuild the electrical system. But because access during renovation can create opportunities that become harder later.

    Think about future lighting, additional appliances, charging locations, smart-home controls, adjacent-room improvements, future outdoor kitchen, EV charging, or other planned electrical equipment.

    Ask: “Is there anything we're likely to want later that would be much easier to plan now?”

    Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes one small decision during rough-in can save a much larger disruption later.
