Federal Pacific Electrical Panels: The Hidden Danger in Florida Homes

If you own an older home in Sarasota, Bradenton, Parrish, or Lakewood Ranch, there is a hidden danger that could be lurking in your garage or utility room. For decades, Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels were installed in millions of homes. Today, they are widely recognized by electricians, home inspectors, and insurance companies as significant fire hazards.

As a 4th-generation licensed electrical contractor, we've replaced hundreds of these panels across Southwest Florida. In this guide, we'll explain exactly why these panels are dangerous and why your insurance company might be demanding you replace them.

The Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) "Stab-Lok" Danger

For decades, Federal Pacific was one of the most popular manufacturers of electrical panels in the United States. Millions of their "Stab-Lok" panels were installed in Florida homes.

The problem? The breakers routinely fail to trip when overloaded.

A circuit breaker's only job is to shut off the power if a circuit draws too much electricity or short-circuits. Independent testing found that FPE Stab-Lok breakers fail to trip at an alarming rate—sometimes up to 60% of the time during a surge. This leads to extreme heat, melted wires, and devastating electrical fires.

Insurance Companies Are Dropping Homes with FPE Panels

Because the fire risk is so well documented, the vast majority of Florida homeowners insurance companies will no longer write policies for homes with Federal Pacific panels. If a 4-Point Inspection reveals an FPE panel, you will likely be given a very short window (often 30 days) to replace it, or your policy will be canceled.

    What Should You Do?

If you have an FPE panel, do not wait for an insurance ultimatum. Replacing the panel is the only safe and code-compliant solution. A modern 200-amp panel upgrade will protect your home, ensure you can maintain insurance coverage, and provide safe, reliable power for modern appliances.
