Your electrical panel should be almost completely silent. A faint, steady electrical hum from transformer equipment nearby is sometimes normal. A buzzing, crackling, or loud humming that is coming from inside the panel itself is not.
A noisy panel is one of the clearest warning signs your electrical system gives you. Here is what causes it, what it means for your home, and when to act.
What Does Normal Sound Like?
A properly functioning electrical panel may produce a very slight, barely audible hum. This comes from the natural vibration of electrical current moving through the system. If you have to press your ear to the panel door to notice it, that is likely normal.
If you can hear your panel from across the room, or if the sound is buzzing, crackling, clicking, or irregularly loud, something needs attention.
Five Causes of a Buzzing or Humming Panel
A breaker under heavy load. A single overloaded breaker can produce a distinct buzzing sound. This is the most common and least serious cause. It typically means a circuit is being asked to carry more current than it is rated for. The fix may be as simple as redistributing the load, but a licensed electrician should assess whether the circuit itself is properly sized.
A failing or worn breaker. Breakers do not last forever. As internal components age, they can produce an audible buzz even under normal load. A failing breaker may also be slow to trip when it should, which is the bigger concern.
A loose connection inside the panel. Loose wiring connections create resistance, resistance creates heat, and heat creates a buzzing or humming sound. A loose connection inside a panel is not a DIY repair. It requires a licensed electrician with the panel properly de-energized.
An overloaded panel. If your home's overall electrical demand is pushing the limits of your panel's rated capacity, the entire panel can buzz under load. This is common in older Florida homes with 100-amp service that now run central AC, multiple large appliances, and modern electronics simultaneously.
A problem with a specific appliance or circuit. Sometimes the panel itself is fine, but a fault in a connected appliance or circuit is feeding noise back through the system. Dimmer switches, certain motor-driven appliances, and damaged wiring can all create buzzing that seems to come from the panel.
What to Check Before You Call
These are safe observations any homeowner can make:
- Open the panel door and listen. Can you identify whether the sound is coming from one specific breaker, or from the panel in general?
- Look for visible signs of trouble. Scorch marks, discoloration, or any melted plastic around breakers or wiring are signs of heat damage. Do not touch anything inside the panel.
- Check whether the sound gets louder under load. If the buzzing increases when you run the AC, dishwasher, or dryer, an overloaded circuit or panel may be the cause.
- Note when the sound started. Did it begin after adding a new appliance? After a power surge or storm? After recent electrical work? This information helps a licensed electrician diagnose the cause faster.
Do not attempt to tighten connections, replace breakers, or touch any wiring inside the panel yourself. The panel is live even with the main breaker turned off.
Sounds That Mean Call Today
Schedule a same-day call if you notice any of the following:
- Crackling or popping sounds from the panel
- A burning smell near the panel at any time
- Discoloration or scorch marks on breakers or the panel interior
- A breaker that feels hot to the touch
- The buzzing started after a power surge or storm
- The sound is getting louder or more frequent over time
- Any breaker that trips immediately after being reset
These are signs of conditions that can lead to a house fire. Buzzing combined with a burning smell is an emergency. Turn off the main breaker and call immediately.
Why Florida Panels Are More Vulnerable
Florida's climate puts electrical panels under stress that most homeowners in other states do not experience.
Year-round heat and humidity accelerate the aging of breaker components and wiring insulation inside the panel. Many homes across Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmetto, and Manatee County still have 100-amp panels that were installed decades ago. These panels were sized for a different era of electrical demand and are frequently running near their capacity limit.
Lightning surges are another major factor. Florida sees more cloud-to-ground lightning strikes per year than any other state. A surge does not have to be a direct hit to damage panel components. A nearby strike can send excess voltage through the utility lines and into your panel, weakening breakers and connections in ways that show up later as buzzing, intermittent tripping, or heat buildup.
If your panel is more than 25 years old and you are hearing new sounds from it, an inspection is worth scheduling before the issue becomes an emergency.
