    Part 1: Know Your Home

    • Square footage of your home (approximate is fine)
    • Year the home was built
    • Age of your current electrical panel (check the inside door of the panel for the brand and manufacture year)
    • Panel brand (common brands: Square D, Siemens, GE, Eaton, Federal Pacific, Zinsco)
    • Current panel amp capacity (100 amp, 150 amp, 200 amp - listed on the main breaker)
    • Number of electrical panels in the home (some homes have a main panel plus a sub-panel)
    • Whether your home is on well water or city water (affects grounding requirements)
    • Type of wiring if known (aluminum wiring is common in homes built between 1965 and 1973)

Part 2: Know What You Want Quoted

Check all that apply to your project:

    • Panel upgrade or replacement
    • 4-point inspection preparation (for insurance or home sale)
    • Outlet installation or addition
    • Dedicated circuit for appliance (HVAC, hot tub, dryer, etc.)
    • EV charger installation (Level 2 home charging)
    • Generator installation or transfer switch
    • Lighting installation (interior or exterior)
    • Ceiling fan installation
    • Whole-home surge protection
    • Smoke or carbon monoxide detector installation
    • GFCI or AFCI outlet or breaker upgrades
    • Home rewiring or partial rewiring
    • New construction or addition wiring
    • Commercial or rental property electrical work
    • Other (describe below)

    Part 3: Document Existing Issues

    • Are any breakers tripping repeatedly?
    • Are any outlets sparking, warm to the touch, or not working?
    • Do any lights flicker or dim unexpectedly?
    • Have you noticed a burning smell near any outlet, panel, or appliance?
    • Have you had any partial or total power outages not caused by the utility company?
    • Do you have aluminum wiring and have been told it needs attention?
    • Has a previous inspector flagged electrical concerns in a report? (If yes, bring the report)

Part 4: Gather These Documents and Photos

    • Photos of your main electrical panel (inside door open showing breakers)
    • Photos of any problem areas (outlets, switches, damaged wiring)
    • Any prior electrical inspection reports or 4-point inspection reports
    • Insurance company requirements if you are seeking coverage or renewal
    • HOA rules or restrictions if applicable
    • Permit history for the home if available (check with your county)

    Part 5: Prepare Your Questions

Use this space to write your questions before the estimate appointment. Here are some you may want to ask:

    • What does this project require in terms of permits?
    • Will the work pass a 4-point inspection?
    • How long will the project take?
    • Will the power need to be shut off and for how long?
    • What is included in the quote and what is not?
    • Do you provide a written estimate before work begins?
    • Are there financing options available?
